Keeping in mind that social networking is all about building relationships participating in forums is just as valuable as participating in other networks such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Forums are an additional social network to connect with your target audience.
Before you join: here are 3 tips to help you decide if a forum is a good match for you
1. Is the forum relevant? There is no reason to join a forum just to join a forum. Join a forum that is relevant to your industry. If you join the forum will you be able to share your knowledge? Sharing your knowledge sets you up as an expert.
2. Is the forum active? There is no reason to join a forum that has little to no participation. You want to be able to interact with others so you want forum members that are involved.
3. Will the forum allow signature lines? As with all social networks read the terms of service prior to signing up. If the forum does not allow signature lines you may want to reconsider. It is in the signature line that you can add a link to your website.
After you join: here are 3 tips to help you once you are in the forum
1. Your signature line: first, observe how other members format their signature lines. Then, model yours similarly. It is to your advantage to keep your signature line short and sweet. Consider including your name and a link to your website.
2. Posts are not advertisements. It will be in very poor taste and most likely is a violation of the forums rules to post an advertisement for your business. Don’t be labeled a “spammer.” Instead, your posts should be relevant, a demonstration of your knowledge and contributing to the conversation.
3. Be Social! You need to respond to threads and create threads. Get to know other members in the forum by reading their profiles.
After you have been active for awhile you will establish a reputation. People will view you as an expert and seek you and hopefully your services and products.
